About Providence
The only U.S. city to be named one of the "Top Ten Up-and-Coming Travel Destinations" by the Wall Street Journal, Providence combines the accessibility and friendliness of a small town with the culture and sophistication of a big city. Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, who was fleeing religious intolerance in the Massachusetts colony, Providence is home to five college campuses, including Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Its thriving arts community has caused Providence to be named as a top Arts Destination for mid-size cities. Vibrant and diverse neighborhoods cater to locally prominent populations of Italian, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Liberian, Armenian and Dominican descent. There's and excellent restaurant and music scene centered on Providence's lively downtown. (photo by Richard Benjamin)
About Pawtucket
Pawtucket was founded in 1671, at the strategic falls of the Blackstone River and the upper tidewaters of Narragansett Bay. It is a city with a special place in the industrial history of the United States, for it was here at the Slater Mill Historic Site that Samuel Slater successfully constructed and operated machines for spinning cotton yarn in 1793. As the textile industry thrived, a variety of machines and iron working shops grew up alongside it. In recent years, as blue-collar industries have moved out of the Northeast, Pawtucket has redefined itself as a magnet for artists and craftspeople. While still friendly to manufacturing, Pawtucket has fostered the movement of artists into the old mills to live and to operate studios. (photo by Kenchi)
